Wayfare Tavern in San Francisco

Wayfare Tavern is Tyler Florence’s restaurant located in Rubicon’s old Financial District location.  Rustic American cuisine (read classic comfort foods), quality craft beers and a good wine list makes this a great “can’t miss” dining stop in a city that boasts some of the best restaurants in America.  I have frequented this establishment three times so far and have never been disappointed.  The most recent visit was a family get together.  Connie and I met up with our daughter Cristina in the city and headed to WF for an early evening dinner.

Great open kitchen on first floor.  Seats along the prep line are a visual treat as you watch the train in action – from prep to plate!

Dinner begins with complimentary pillow soft and hot buttery popovers that melt in your mouth and are absolutely addictive!

I chose the WAYFARE BURGER “LE GRAND” – grass-fed proprietary grind, Marin brie, roasted onion, smoked bacon, brioche  with sunny side up Petaluma egg and french fries.  The burger is juicy, full of flavor and the creaminess of the egg provides a natural sauce.  Washed down with 2008 Qupé Syrah Nielsen Vineyard Santa Maria Valley.

BAKED MACARONI & CHEESE – Jack cheese, garlic bread crumbs, chive & smoked olive oil.  Gooey and crispy at the same time this dish makes a perfect side.

ORGANIC FRIED CHICKEN – buttermilk brine, roasted garlic, crisp woody herbs, lemon.  Perfectly seasoned, crisp and moist.

GRILLED SCOTTISH SALMON – Yukon Gold potato salad, sea beans, chopped Jidori egg, salsa verde, sturgeon caviar.  This was my least favorite dish – not because it was not well prepared.  Just seemed out of place with all the other rich fat, comfort food 🙂

SMOKED SONOMA PORK RIBS – roasted plums, corn on the cob, TF’s barbecue sauce.  Pure southern goodness here.  Meaty, smoky and rich barbeque flavor on this pig meat!

PEACH PIE – goat’s milk ice cream and rosemary sugar!  This is by far the best dessert at WF.  Available only when peaches are in season this is a seriously creative pie with sweet goodness in every morsel.

It was a great night … all smiles, great food and conversation.

A nice unexpected surprise was the appearance of Tyler Florence table side.  He is a great host, a gentleman and really easy to talk to … very gracious and not “celebrity” like.

God – like we hadn’t had enough already … our server brought us cookies that the kitchen was testing out.

A couple of parting shots as the evening came to a close.  Wayfare Tavern … unconditionally recommended.
