Backyard BBQ + Breaking in My New Cole Haan Saddle Kicks!

The Saddle shoe is a low-heeled, oxford, casual shoe characterized by a plain toe and distinctive, saddle-shaped decorative panel placed mid foot. Saddle shoes are typically constructed of leather and are mostly white with a black saddle, although any color combination is available.  Mark McNairy, Aldens,  Allen Edmonds, J.Crew each have their own take on this classic.  At a July 4th blow out sale, I picked up a pair of the Duke Performance Saddle in a combination of White / Green / Navy.

Classic American sportswear perfect for wearing at my back yard BBQ (more on what was served a bit later).  With guests in town, these kicks were my choice of footwear.  Here’s how I wore them … Sock-less with dark selvedge denim from Stronghold, LA.  The term selvedge refers to the “self-edge”, a finished edge created by the production process (as seen in the picture below).  Selvedge is produced on old-style shuttle looms.  Denim purists value the shuttle looms for the higher quality that can be achieved. Basically, with a shuttle loom, the weaving process involves a cross-thread that goes back and forth as one continuous thread to create the fabric. This results in a finished edge that will not fray because the cross-threads, or weft, double back on themselves. A superior strength fabric is created.

Relaxing with a Pilsner Urquell in my sitting room before firing up the grill …

In the backyard … as the BBQ gets going …

Relaxing by the spa … well earned after the perfectly executed grilled poultry!

Now for the chow … grilled chicken in a marinade of red chilies, sugar, garlic, vinegar, salt, and white wine.

Accompanied by roasted corn and sweet potato chili fries …

… and Albarino wine from Bokisch Vineyards.  This Spanish varietal produced in Victor, California has notes of crisp Fuji apple, pear and grapefruit rind.  Simple, refreshing and delicious as a summer wine should be.

Dessert to finish … home made dark chocolate chip, oatmeal and walnut cookies.

Why is the copy of the latest GQ pictured with the last two dishes you ask?  Because it has the sexy Mila Kunis on the cover, this is my blog and I think that’s reason enough … Wow!  This post should be on Freshly Pressed.  WordPress – are you listening?  🙂
